What is a SCIF?

A Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, or SCIF, is a specially accredited space used to process, store or discuss classified information. Because these environments follow strict security protocols, devices with active wireless transmission may be prohibited or require formal authorization.

For someone who wears hearing aids, these requirements can create a unique challenge. Wireless connectivity can be valuable in everyday life, but it may need to be professionally disabled before a hearing aid can be used in a secure workplace.

Advanced hearing technology for secure environments

Phonak offers a selection of solutions that can be professionally configured for SCIF use. The wireless functionality is disabled through the device’s firmware rather than being temporarily turned off by the wearer.

Available options include:

  • Phonak EON R
  • Phonak Eon Sphere R
  • Phonak Virto R Infinio

These options address different hearing needs, listening demands and style preferences, including a custom in-the-ear option.

Outside of a secure environment, modern connectivity can help you stay connected to calls, media and the people around you. Inside a SCIF, security requirements come first.

Your hearing care professional can help you select an appropriate hearing solution and complete the required professional configuration based on your hearing and occupational needs.

If you work in or regularly access a secure facility:

  1. Tell your government audiologist that SCIF access is part of your occupational environment.
  2. Confirm your facility’s requirements with your security officer before selecting or configuring a device.
  3. Ask about SCIF configuration for eligible Phonak hearing aids.
  4. Maintain any documentation required by your organization or facility.
